The XML database or the Extensive Markup Language database is data persistence software that preserves the original or previous version of data even after it is modified. It primarily has the ability of being accessed, imported or exported in the XML format.

The XML database is designed to achieve four major objectives, such as the development of technology specifications in order to effectively manage the data in the XML database. Under an Open Source License, the XML Database also contributes reference implementations of the specifications. Another feature of this database is that is can form a community where XML users and vendors can ask different questions as well as share information about the XML application.

There are two main types of XML database. These are the XML enabled and the Native XML.

The XML enabled database or the XEDB is a system that features an additional XML mapping layer. The XML mapping layer is often provided by the vendor or by another party. It is basically used to manage the storage as well as the retrieval of the data.

The Native XML Database or the NXD is designed to define and understand a logical model for an XML data document. It is also used to store and retrieve certain documents. The NXD often includes PCDATA, document order, and elements.

Much like a relational database, it uses rows in a table. The Native XML also similarly uses an XML document that is mainly used as the primary storage unit of the application.

Apart from the two major XML types, there is also the Hybrid XML Database or the HXD. This type of database can be regarded as either as an XML enabled database or as a native XML database. This feature of the Hybrid XML largely depends on the requirement of the computer application.
