You may have encountered the term “online database” several times. Although the term may sound really technical, it is in fact quite easy to understand.

A database is a collection of data or information such as graphics, text or sounds. Thus, in its simplest meaning, an online database is a database that can be accessed over the Internet.

Finding an online database would mean that you are accessing information that exists outside your computer system. Instead of searching for data inside your computer, you are connecting to another computer network. The data or the information also exists remotely on a remote server of a database company. The Internet is basically a client-server system. It stores various data that can easily be accessed by the client.

One of the most popular examples of an online database is the search engine. The search engine is primarily an information retrieval system that functions by finding data or information stored on a computer system.

It operates by simply typing the keyword of the information you need. Once you click the SEARCH button, your desktop computer will try to look for information from the Internet in the server. The information or the data owned by a database producer will display the results on your computer monitor. You can access the data by clicking on the site to view the information. The data can be stored by downloading it or by printing it out.

An online database is very useful, practical and functional. It allows you to find almost any information that you need in a very short span of time. Online databases also allow you to retrieve as well as save information for your own use later on.
